Shift to Reading
AI has changed the balance of the job. Before, most of the work was writing. Now it’s reading as much as writing.
In code, that shift is obvious. AI generates the first draft. Your job is to read it, understand it, judge it, and direct the next iteration. Sometimes the output is good. Sometimes it’s disorganized and you have to read carefully just to understand what needs fixing. The same is true when working with AI on writing. You write a clear prompt, then you read. You analyze the structure, the argument, the word choices. Either way, you are spending more time with language than you were before.
That compounds. More reading builds judgment about what good looks like. More writing builds a record of your thinking. Posts, notes, documents you can return to. Ideas that got sharper through the process of being written down and refined. Before, most of that thinking happened in my head or in code. Now it’s on the page.
Reading always made you a better writer. AI is just forcing a lot more of both.
